Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose Review (Addict Music)

Beth Jeans Houghton is 21 year old singer songwriter from Newcastle Upon Tyne. According to her Myspace, she’s a bit ambiguous and wishes she had been born in the 50s to have made music in the 70s to retire in the 80s and to come back in the 2000’s. Any twenty something quirky musician surely wishes the same but we won’t go into that. The Hooves of Destiny are her backing band, unfortunately for them they won’t get much of a look in, because it’s not really about them. As it is standard these days that if you are part of an outfit that has the word ‘and’ in the middle of the band name and you come after the word in question no one cares about you.

Tipped to be the next big post-neo qlam folk act since Florence and The Machine, Beth JH and THOD seem to be well on their way. The album opens with a bang, the poptastic ‘Sweet Tooth Bird’ is uplifting and infectious, pop music as it should be. ‘Humble digs’ goes from light to dark, with its banjo, drums and simple melody to its contrasting choral chanting, perfection.  ‘Nightswimmer’ is a very charming and enchanting song with some minimal electronic elements.

Drawing influences from anything to military drums to operatic vocals to the Baroque, Classical era ‘Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose’ hasn’t got many dull moments. This is one of those albums that get’s your imagination going visually; it’s all very fantastical in my head right now. I can also see Florence running to the hills in fear already, with her floaty dress on and wild hair in tow, all in slow motion naturally. Here comes the real competition, Beth’s vocal ability and whimsical style rivals those of Florence’s any day but all in a heavenly fashion of course.

‘Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose’ is a very expressive, fresh, eccentric and whimsical album, which is never a bad thing.

Rating: 4/5
