When Beth Jeans Houghton decided to buy Fender Stratocaster, quit school and become a musician, she was only 16 years old. Today she's one of the most exciting, new artists on the music scene.
Born in Transylvania to a pack of albino werewolves who raised her on chewing tobacco and stuffed clams: that's a great answer you would have gotten if you've met that girl from Northern England in her previous life. It's just as crazy as her amazing pop-folk music heard on a new album "Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose".
Beth Jeans Houghton and her band The Hooves of Destiny used to be called as The Next Big Thing back in 2009. It took them three years to finally debut and prove all the critics of this world that they won't burn out as fast as shooting stars. And they made it: The Wire says it's "a really cool piece of new, folk elements", to Uncut Beth is just "impressive" and Sunday Times called the album one of the hottests acts of the upcoming summer. We met with the Pop-Lady and her bass player Rory Gibson on a sunny Friday morning to chat.
Your song "Dodecahedron" is about a dream. What does that mean?
Beth: Yeah, in my dream I was running around like crazy and asking people what dodecahedron was. I myself haven't really known until I found out later that it's a geometrical figure with twelve walls. But the song isn't even about it.
Rory: Yeah, it's only mentioned once.
Beth: The rest revolves around a person.
Can I ask what you dreamed about that night?
Beth: Oh my God (laughs)!
I believe you remember?
Beth: Oh wow! Can I really say that?
Rory: Yes, go ahead.
Beth: But it's so embarassing! Alright, I was in a hotel with my boyfriend, but for some reason I shared a room with my best friend Sophie, not with him. Sophie and I went into our room. Oh God, I can't talk about it!
Rory: Oh come on, it was just a dream!
Beth: But it's so disgusting! Alright, I somehow fell down and had the worst diarrhea ever (laughs)!
Oh no!
Beth: I know! Beyond belief, right? Of course, suddenly there were a lot of people in the room, along with the hotel manager who immediately demanded my credit card to buy a new carpet for the room. And as if it wasn't enough, my ex's new girlfriend happened to be there as well and she started flirting with my new friend! It was just awful!
Sounds like an exciting first night in Berlin.
Beth: But it's impossible to imagine. Also, this is the first time I've been asked about my dream.

What do you do if you're not sleeping? You have a lot of time off between interviews, soundchecks and shows.
Beth: I drink coffee! As much as I can. I also have a lot of irrelevant things to do which help me kill time while waiting for something. For example, I can always delete pictures I don't like (laughs).
Do you read a lot?
Beth: Yeah, I've just started reading "The Pump House Gang" by Tom Wolfe. But I've just started. I may stop reading it because I'll get bored too fast or I'll just lose it.
Do you have a favorite author?
Beth: Yes, Richard Brautigan. I like his writing style, it's very metaphorical. How about you?
Rory: I really don't have a favorite one.
Beth: You do like reading musicians' biographies.
What do you think about Hunter S. Thompson?
Beth: Oh, I love Hunter!
Rory: Me too, of course. And Lester Bangs, naturally.
