Beth Jeans HOUGHTON reinvents the punk rock soul

It's the first time Beth Jeans Houghton and her band The Hooves of Destiny have appeared at the Witloof Bar, and the tickets were not sold out, which is surprising since there's a lot of attention going on around their newest album. Maybe it's because it was released not so long ago.

Beth and her band seem relaxed while they're exchanging jokes in English <<Geordie>>, because the vocalist comes from Newcastle. It was a perfect occasion for me to take Juliette, my 9-years-old daughter with me. Beth is not a person you would imagine she'd be. 20, no make up, dressed in a denim jacket - nothing eccentric. Well, maybe it is a little eccentric that she's Anthony Kiedis' girlfriend? Or maybe it's just an affair with no future? I'll leave that to tabloids. She looked fresh, didn't know much about Belgium and asked the audience what to do after the show and announced that they'd songs mostly from their new album, in no particular order.

The show started off with "Atlas", a very rhythmic song with a very quiet chorus. Original punk rock kind of thing. Then there's "Dodecahedron". Next is "Franklin Benedict", a song almost taken out of the 70's with amazing harmonies. The only thing missing was the violin which appears on the CD. Then they went on with "Liliputt" full of space and rhythm, "The Barely Skinny Bone Tree", "a song very acoustic and soothing", and "Humble Digs" with an element of space, sounding like punk rock for adults.

They ended their show with a cover of Madonna's "Like a Prayer" and a little punk song called "Epic".

Then she signed a few booklets and pictures and gave my daughter a band poster on which she wrote: "Juliet, you're going to have an amazing life". Beth's carrer is just as amazing.
