So attached are the English to folk that they’ll lasso even the most un-
likely candidate into its corral. Witness Newcastle native Beth Jeans
Houghton, who has to bat away the folk ingénue box with the same
regularity as she has to swat at the comparisons with Laura Marling and
Bat For Lashes’ Natasha Khan. Perhaps her early work (on EP Hot Toast
Volume 1) was folksy but on her full-length debut, the 21-year- old
resolutely upends this with a slate of songs that are a feast for the
senses, all trumpets blazing, strings trilling and pace-changing.
Houghton’s otherworldly voice is the real triumph here, managing at once
to sound strangely futuristic and like it wouldn’t have been out of
place soundtracking a 19th century maypole dance. And, no, we have no
idea where the Dalí- esque album title comes from either.
Key Tracks: “Lilliput”, “Atlas”, “Dodecahedron”
