Rising folk star
Beth Jeans Houghton is only 21, but she's a fan of glam-rock stars like
Bowie and Bolan. On 29 March 2012, she's coming to the Rockhalcafe for a
free gig and to convince you of her talent. She may not take life to
seriously, but when it comes to making divine music, Beth means
business.
From Newcastle, and despite only picking up a guitar three years ago,
Houghton has an impressive number of plaudits to her name. Her debut
single, "Golden", produced by folk star Adem, quickly sold its limited
run of 500 copies. The first run of her EP sold out on the day of
release. She has made a name for herself within a burgeoning folk scene,
supporting King Creosote, Bon Iver and Tinariwen. No wonder that she is
being hailed as the psych-folk singer to watch.
The young lady started writing songs in her teens, first appeared in
front of an audience in 2006 and issued debut EP on Bird Records in
2008. Having relocated to Los Angeles, Haughton signed to Mute Records
who announced that they will be releasing her debut long player Yours
Truly, Cellophane Nose in February 2012. The album was recorded with Ben
Hillier whose previous production credits include Blur, Depeche Mode
and Elbow.
Beth Jeans Houghton has garnered a reputation as an antidote to the
current crop of acoustic songstresses. With her alternative blend of
experimental folk, Beth has been hailed by the NME in 2008 as "a Joni
Mitchell for the anti-folk generation". With influences ranging from
Frank Zappa, Vashti Bunyan, Four Tet and Love, Beth has cultivated a
sound that is truly her own.
Houghton is anything but boring. Words trip off her tongue and her
energy is infectious. Judging by the sheer number of plaudits behind
her, she really is going somewhere. Bring along your friends to the
Rockhalcafe on Thursday 29 March and enjoy the dazzling music of Beth
Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny. Glam and psychedelia will be
waiting for you!
