New music: Beth Jeans Houghton and the Hooves of Destiny – Sweet Tooth Bird

This Newcastle singer has taken nearly four years to release her debut album. Let's celebrate her tardiness with this new track.

In a music industry that thrives on the new, it's heartening that Newcastle's Beth Jeans Houghton and her band, the Hooves of Destiny, have decided to canter rather than gallop their way to a debut album release. Tipped by many in 2009, and with rumours of a record circulating ever since, the band will finally release the Ben Hillier-produced Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose early next year. Still, let's celebrate their tardiness for a moment. Sweet Tooth Bird is the follow-up to the excellent Dodecahedron, and like that song, has a brilliantly idiosyncratic charm, all bar-room piano, warm brass parps and Houghton's unsettling whispering voice. Around the half-way mark the song suddenly switches from its jovial shuffle into something more sinister, Houghton's vocals heavily treated and layered as she sings "oh please calm down". For the video - premired here - the band navigate a post-apocalyptic world, fighting over colour and living, it would seem, out of green houses.

Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose is due on 6 February 2012 via Mute. Sweet Tooth Bird is due on 20 February.
